Yankee Candle recently became the latest company to take a feminine product and try to dress it up as some kind of head-smashing symbol of brawn and masculinity. Just look at the names of this line of candles for men: “Riding Mower,” “2×4,” “First Down,” and worst of all, ”Man Town.” What the hell does Man Town smell like?! Dirty laundry and ball sweat? Not only is the attempt to pander to men obnoxious, it’s ill-advised. But Yankee explains that the fragrance will help men “Escape to the man cave with this masculine blend of spices, woods and musk.” It sounds like a “SNL” spoof commercial.
This trend of man-ifying products is ridiculous. Yankee believes that enough men are adverse to buying their diverse, existing line of scented candles that it can turn a profit by churning out bulls*** “Man Town” scents. The company is definitely not alone, though. Check out more contrived attempts to market a perfectly unisex product to men.
Dodge Grand Caravan, the “Man Van”

Dodge’s so-called man van actually shuts down when a soccer mom gets behind the wheel. It’s specially formulated to protect a man’s fragile ego.
Dr. Pepper Ten

It’s not for women. It says so right in the ad! No, it’s diet soda with 10 extra calories, the requisite number to ensure that men don’t grow breasts or develop the urge to do womanly things.
Vaseline for Men

Hey, look! Michael Strahan uses Vaseline for Men. He’s tough! We’re not chemists but the ingredients for men’s cooling hydration body lotion are almost identical to the regular Vaseline total moisture.
Weight Watchers for Men
Weight Watchers’ Charles Barkley commercial is hysterical but the suggestion that “real men don’t diet” is plain stupid.

Yesterday, the member organizations of the Davao City AIDS Council lighted candles in memory of those who have died due to HIV/AIDS.
Every third Sunday of the month, the Global Network of People Living with HIV with members in 115 countries, mark the International AIDS Candlelight Memorial, an event which started in 1983. These countries host more than 1,300 community organizations to honor the lives lost and raise social consciousness.
The city’s Reproductive Health and Wellness Center (RHWC) has pegged 29 persons with HIV/AIDS has died since 1993 but this figure could be very conservative considering that many could have died without being diagnosed with the disease.
Of the 262 HIV/AIDS cases monitored by the RHWC, 245 are males. Connie Actub of the Alliance Against AIDS in Mindanao, in a press conference yesterday said that everyone is vulnerable to infection if they are involved in risky behaviors. The increase in the number of males testing positive could be due to the fact that there are more of them who have gone to the RHWC for free testing.
The candlelight is not just a memorial for the millions who have died of HIV/AIDS. According to the global network, it provides opportunities for leadership development, policy advocacy, partnerships and improvement of community mobilization skills.

There’s one candle company that’s trying to prove that scented candles aren’t just for the ladies.
Yankee Candles is rolling out four new scents just for men, including Man Town, First Down, Two-by-Four and Riding Mower. The company says men make up 30 percent of its customers.
One Wisconsin store put “Man Town” to the test with customers: it’s a combination of spices, wood, and musk.
“I’m a shower gel guy. So, actually they smell kind of like shower gel. So, actually not too bad,” said Dave Fantini.
The company says sales so far have been better than projected. It expects them to go even higher asFather’s Dayapproaches.

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — One of the nation’s most popular candle makers is now targeting men with a line of scented candles.
Yankee Candle’s new line of “Man Candles” include scents like “Riding Mower” – which smells like a lawn – and “2X4” – the smell of lumber.
The “Man Town” scent combines a “masculine” blend of spices, woods and musk, while “First Down” combines orange, patchouli, vetiver and leather – apparently the aroma of a football game.
Each of the candles burn up to 150 hours and cost $27.99 each. Smaller candles burn up to 45 hours and cost $17.99 each.
Masculine candle accessories are also available, such as candle jar toppers decorated with footballs and football helmets, charm-like jar clingers shaped like mini mugs of beer and beer stein-shaped votive holders.
These manly-smelling candles are being introduced this week, just in time for Father’s Day shopping.

Some ideas seem so natural that you wonder why they haven’t already been invented. And then, there are man candles.

The Yankee Candle Company, of South Deerfield, Mass., is rolling out its first-ever, limited edition Man Candles Collection. The group includes four scents aimed specifically at masculine customers, branching into a market that until now has been largely unexplored.
As Yankee Candle puts it, “Now all rooms in the home can have an attractive scent, even the basement, garage, man cave or an entire bachelor pad.” It suggests Man Candles as an ideal Father’s Day or graduation present. (Guys, you be the judge.)
This is a new direction for a company whose candles in classic glass canisters are known for their more perfume-y aromas. (We’ve been using a lilac one for years.) But Yankee Candle has plenty of candle clout, what with 28,500 retail outlets and 554 stores, making it akin to the Starbucks of candles.
The inaugural Man Candles come in three sizes, ranging from $2.99 to $27.99. Their scents are
- Man Town: a masculine blend of spices, woods and musk
- First Down: a combination of orange, patchouli, vetiver and leather that Yankee Candle says is “exciting as game day”
- Riding Mower: “the intensely summery scent of freshly cut grass”
- 2 x 4: Yankee Candle promises the “warm, unmistakable scent of freshly planed wood and sawdust”
But are these the four scents that you’d pick for a guy? I’m thinking there needs to be a BBQ Man Candle, filling the air with meat drippings and charcoal. And New Car Smell, letting you experience the car of your dreams. And how about Clean Laundry, the Man Candle that Mom buys for you? Or the ever popular choice, bacon.

When writing this post we were first concerned that the term “mandles” might confuse readers into thinking Yankee Candle entered into the men’s summer footwear category. Alas they are not — they’ve released a collection of limited edition home fragrances branded as Man Candles with soon-to-be classic scents like:
Riding Mower: “Hot sun. Cool breeze. And the intensely summery scent of freshly cut grass.”
2 x 4: “The warm, unmistakable scent of freshly planed wood and sawdust evokes a sense of confidence and quality.”
And who could forget?:
First Down: “This combination of orange, patchouli, vetiver, and leather is as exciting as game day.”

According to the press release, these “down-to-earth fragrances” can add an “attractive scent” to the “garage, man cave, or an entire bachelor pad.” Hooray!
We’re still questioning whether the collection is actually meant to be a gag gift for dad with the fast approaching Father’s Day on the horizon but who could blame us when CollegeHumor put out this video for “the man in your life who already mans everything” in 2008:
Ah, if only the folks at Yankee took note of the undervalued scent of Hardware Store… mmm ….
The Man Candles collection is available at Yankee Candle store locations starting at $2.99 for a car jar size.

Leftover wax in a used candle jar is notoriously tricky to clean out, but throwing the candle in a freezer to loosen up the residue may just do the trick.
J. Angel posted this tip on Snapguide, and explains that the freezer will cause the wax to contract from the sides of the jar, making it much easier to scrape out with a dull knife. Once most of the wax is out, a few quick swabs with baby oil or vinegar should clear up any residue, leaving you with a perfectly good jar for countertop storage.

EL PASO, Texas (AP) — A legitimate load meant for lighting up has yielded nearly a ton of marijuana at a West Texas border checkpoint.
